  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Walter Arthur Reginald (Wal) Mackney was born in 1905 in Bellingen, New South Wales. He moved to Sydney in the 1920s, where he joined the New South Wales Police Force and became involved in rugby. Mackney represented Australia in rugby union in 1934 and 1935, and also competed in heavyweight boxing. He was a member of the NSW Police Rowing Club's eight that represented Australia at the 1936 Berlin Olympics, finishing fourth in their heat and failing to qualify for the final in the repechage. Mackney passed away in 1975. His son, Kim Mackney, represented Australia in rowing at the 1972 Munich Olympic Games.

  • Scope and Content
    1. Letter from Thos. [Thomas] Cook & Son - Wagons-Lits (Australasia) Pty. Ltd. to W. Mackney relating to travel formalities for the Australian Olympic Team to Berlin, 22 April 1936. The verso contains a pencil draft for a speech at an overseas reception, addressing ‘Mr Lord Mayor’.

    2. Small souvenir notebook with ‘Hearty Good Wishes from Australian Olympic Team 1936’ printed on cover, including the Commonwealth Coat of Arms and a boomerang. Designed and printed in Sydney by Deaton & Spencer Ltd, bound with green and gold cord.

    3. Schedule for ‘Inspection of the Leverkusen Factory by the Australian Olympia Team on Monday, June 22nd, 1936’, organised by Bayer (I.G. Farbenindustrie Aktiengesellschaft, Pharmaceutical Department), with German wine label pasted on verso. Contains a loose compliments slip issued by the German railways (Reichsbahnzentrale).

    4. Brochure ‘Germany Olympic Games Berlin, 1936 1st-16th August’, including timetable and programme. Published in Berlin by the Reichsbahnzentrale für den Deutschen Reiseverkehr, in co-operation with the Propaganda Committee for the XIth Olympic Games and the Organizing Committee for the XIth Olympic Games, 3rd edition, December 1935.

    5. Brochure ‘Germany Olympic Games Berlin, 1936 1st-16th August’, including programme and ticket information. Published in Berlin by the Reichsbahnzentrale für den Deutschen Reiseverkehr, in co-operation with the Propaganda Committee for the Olympic Games, 2nd edition, January 1936.

    6. Publication ‘Official Guide Book to the Celebration of the XIth Olympiad Berlin 1936’, including a foldout Olympic map of Berlin. Published in Berlin by Organisationskomitee für die XI. Olympiade Berlin 1936, Reichssportverlag, 1936.
    Title page inscribed ‘Wal Mackney P Berlin 28.7.36.’ Contains pasted in ephemera relating to manufacturer Bochumer Verein and the Berlin Olympic bell. Also contains a loose receipt from department store Wertheim, Berlin.

    11. Booklet ‘Berlin: The Scene of the Eleventh Olympic Games, 1936’, featuring captioned photographs relating to Berlin, the Berlin countryside and 1936 Olympic Games sites. Published in Berlin by the German Publicity Commission, 1936.

    12. Menu ‘Farewell Lunch by Mr. A.E. Heath to the Olympic Representatives of the New South Wales Police’, London, 14 October 1936. Verso contains 15 signatures, including by members of the Australian Olympic rowing team.
