In this first interview session, Ursula Dubosarsky discusses her childhood and education, influential teachers and early writing success, and university studies that enriched her love of literature.

Ursula talks about moving to Canberra and writing her first novel Zizzy Zing, learning Biblical Hebrew, and her time in a kibbutz in Israel, where she learned modern Hebrew and met her husband.

Now with a young family, Ursula wrote her first picture book Maisie and the Pinny Gig, which was published in 1989, followed by her first published novel High Hopes the following year. Ursula discusses these books and the many others she wrote throughout the 1990s. She explains the different demands and processes involved in the different book forms, particularly picture books and short chapter books. She discusses her experiences working with illustrators such as Andrew Joyner, Tohby Riddle and Ron Brooks.
