  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Jeffrey Samuels is a Ngiyaampa/Barkindji man from western New South Wales. His mother, Martha Samuels, was from Ngiyaampa/Barkindji country (around Bourke, New South Wales) and his father, Lesley Thompson was from Cunnamulla, Queensland. His great grandfather was a Queensland police tracker, Cassidy Samuels, who was associated with the Aborigines Inland Mission at St Clair, New South Wales (Wonnaruah country).

Martha Samuels was killed in a motor vehicle accident, 1961. Jeffrey and his siblings were soon removed from community and fostered to two different Anglo-Australian families. Samuels moved several times with his foster family and eventually settled in Grafton where he completed his school leaving certificate, 1973.

Samuels moved to Redfern and attended the National Art School, Darlinghurst and eventually achieved a Diploma in Fine Art from Alexander Mackie College of Advanced Education, 1978. He continued to develop his art career and founded the Boomalli Aboriginal Artists Cooperative with nine other artists, 1987.
