  • General note

The Republic Referendum of 1999 asked Australians to vote on whether to alter the Constitution and establish Australia as a republic, replacing the Queen and Governor-General with a President, and to insert a preamble. The two proposals were not approved by a majority of voters, and a majority of votes in each of a majority of the states, therefore the Republic Referendum was defeated.
