    Large folder, 1980s, correspondence with family historians and others about research and writing of 'A Cargo of Women' (non-fiction version). Part of the significant family history which uncovered the 'amnesia' about convict history.

    Panton Family papers, 1743-ca 1854
    William Panton free settler to NSW (1823). Pastoralist near Picton. Brother to George Panton, NSW postmaster. Includes letter to his mother on departing in 1822 and letter dated 1835 to his sister giving his reasons for returning to Scotland.
    Papers relating to his family (earliest date 1743) and the will of James Pyper of which they were all heirs. Despite this, William Panton's shame about failed business dealings caused him to emigrate. Father of Anne Goodlett, nee Panton, a later 19th century philanthropist.
    Letters of cousin Beatrice Panton (late Maunsell) to her cousin Ann Panton in Scotland. Beatrice was a missionary settler who emigrated with her brother Rev George Panton to New Zealand. Four letters covering 1849-1854. She married Rev. Robert Maunsell in 1853. Transcription of the letters is available from Paul Cooper who completed a thesis entitled The Philanthropy of John and Ann Goodlet published as a book 'More Valuable Than Gold, the philanthropy of John & Ann Goodlet.'
