    Sydney George (Sam) Ure-Smith was the son of Sydney Ure Smith, who had established the fine art publishing company Ure Smith Pty Ltd in 1939. Sam worked in the company, taking over its management in 1949 before spending time in London, where he also acted as an agent for publishers and booksellers Angus & Robertson. On his return he moved into general publishing. In 1963 he launched the 'Art and Australia' quarterly journal and became president of the Australian Book Publishers Association.

    Sam Ure-Smith describes his appointment by Angus & Robertson to act as its buying agent with British publishers; the firm's London operations; his experience in setting up as a small independent publisher; the publishing scene in Australia in the 1950s and 1960s; his time as President of the Australian Book Publishers Association and the battle to loosen the control of British publishers over the Australian market into the 1960s.
