  • Scope and Content
Interviewed over two days, Sydney playwright Katherine Thomson discusses her upbringing in North Manly, family life and Catholic education, her teenage years with Australian Theatre For Young People, training as an actor in North Sydney’ Ensemble Theatre, and her career spanning over 30 years writing for the stage and screen.

In interview one, Katherine speaks about her early theatre experience and establishing Theatre South in Wollongong. She discusses her interest in writing about family and community stories and topical issues of social change and justice, such as an estranged whistle-blower in Navigating, migrant stories from still independent Hong Kong and emerging from the Greek civil war in This Hospital My Country, and fictional figures in Kenneth Slessor’s poetry in her musical Darlinghurst Nights.

In interview two she discusses the difference in pace, environment and demands in writing for theatre and television, and her roles as a writer and script producer on the long running NSW country town series set in the 1950’s, A Place called Home. Thomson also explores the interesting and sometimes complex experience in dramatising real life stories for television as with Schapelle Corby and Gina Hancock, and the feature documentary about Florence Broadhurst, directed by Gillian Armstrong and screened at Sundance Film Festival.
