- Scope and ContentAlex Popov discusses his Russian parents being exiled to China and his upbringing in Shanghai during the Japanese occupation in World War II until he was twelve. He talks about his family's move to Australia and his education in Sydney. He talks about his friendships with artist Martin Sharp, writer Richard Neville, meeting his future wife Lin Utzon and the relationship and influence of her father, Jørn Utzon. Popov reflects on his training as an architect, traveling around Europe and moving to Copenhagen, Denmark to study at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts. He talks about returning to Sydney in the early 1980s and his architectural work around Sydney, New South Wales, including the Bather's Pavilion at Balmoral, New South Wales. He describes the challenges he and other architects faced during the 1992 recession and the change encounters with important people who shaped and assisted him in his career, including architect Harry Seidler and Rockpool developer Michael Grant. Popov discusses his relationship with clients and the difficulties of the planning culture in Sydney. He compares and critiques the European and Australian way of architectural teaching and practice.
