  • Scope and Content
In this interview, Pentecost discusses growing up a 'tomboy' in Mt Druitt, playing soccer as a child, and the obstacles facing girls in sports in Australia in the 1970s and 1980s. She discusses her traumatic coming-out story and subsequent homelessness, her romantic relationships with coaches and other football players, and finally finding community through her team and at art school.

She reflects on the prevalence of lesbian women in soccer, the difference between men’s and women’s team coaches, and the changing attitudes to women’s sports. She discusses the naming of 'the Matildas', their overseas tours and the excitement of qualifying for the first ever officially named FIFA Women’s World Cup in 1995, and the lack of media attention or public support in response to the team’s success. She also recalls the extraordinary experience of playing in front of big crowds when overseas and talks about the Matildas’ 1999 nude fundraising calendar and the issues raised regarding the sexualisation of women’s sports.

The first Matilda to march in the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras, she describes designing parade outfits and costumes and attending the popular Harbour Parties. She talks about her life post-Matildas, her career in Kundalini Yoga, her work in the film industry, and taking her short film ‘Sexy Thing’ to the Cannes Film Festival in 2006.
